When I got my new PC case, there was a firewire port on the front panel, and a cable which was inside the case. The cable has to be connected somewhere but doesn't look like it can be plugged into the motherboard. Obviously the firewire port at the front doesnt work as there is no power to it. How do i connect the cable.
If it helps, the end of the cable was poking out the back of the case through the metal panels which are located near the PCI/AGP slots. I've attached some photos


The port at the front of the case is boxed in red.

The cable fits inside the port at the front of the case.

if the cable fits into the port at the front, it is a fire wire cable - maybe an extension cable but built into the case?
in this case you would plug it into the port at the back of you computer.
then you use it like normal, just means you lose one of your firewire ports at the back and becomes replaces with one at the front

Anyway, look on your MoBo's manual for Firewire and see if it supports it

How would that work? The loose end of the cable is the input, the port at the front of the case is the output. The cable needs to powered somewhere.

I don't think it does. Does that mean I can't use the port?

Yes, although you can buy a PCI firewire card.

it would have power from your firewire port already on your motherboard - at the back IF YOU HAVE ONE.

the front port would just act like an extenxion cable - like you can get for USB devices, just instead of having a lose end youu have the end in your case.

It's not connected to my motherboard. Thats what i'm trying to do to get power to it. If you look at the 2nd picture in my first post (the link), you can see the cable. The other end of the cable is the port at the front of the PC. There is no port at the back of my PC. I removed the metal plate allowing the cable to run free inside my case.

i was just saying IF there is already a port at the back of the computer that's how you would power it. and if the cable is a firewire cable i cant think of any other possible way to power it other than an existing port. so if you dont have one then maybe it isnt possible for you to use it.
unless - as suggested you get a PCI FireWire card and that will power this one in the same way i said (and only way it seems it could work) by plugging this cable you have into the port
