I got a DVD writer for a PC the other week and got one that supported LightScribe.

Btw for people who don't know what it is, it lets you burn labels onto CDs and DVDs using the same laser that burns the data.

Just wondering if anyone in the UK has one and has found a good place to get spindles of LightScribe CDs?  I can only seem to find tthem in jewel cases or in 5pk spiundles, but I found them in 50 and 100 spindles on some US sites

In Belgium, most stores I know have them. Though, the maximum I've seen are 10packs. Then again, spindles of more discs wouldn't be bought so much anyways, so why would a store buy them in and sell them? (though, in the future, I'm sure they will be widely available. IF lightscribe gets popular, because that still remains to be seen). Dunno how this is for the UK, but I'd imagine it would be roughly the same.

Best bet to get your hands on big spindles are webshops I guess.

The effect is good. But depends on how you define "good" though....

Some lightscribe drives produce a rather blurry picture. Others are too light (though you could rewrite over it again to make it darker), etc...

Some drives also actually corrupt the data on the disc more than others (so when reading the data on the disc, the drive itself or the software, needs to apply more error correcting than others).

The technology isn't that matured yet and is still in a bit of an "experimental" stage if you will. It isn't yet a standard either, but this can follow in the futur of course (just as there are already plans to make color lightscribing possible => probably means buying a new CD/DVD writer again, so better wait... unless you can spend the money )

It also depends on what brand of compatible (thus with that special lightsribe layer) CDs or DVDs discs you use with what brand of lightsribe drive.

Best is to read some test articles about it in the various computer magazines before buying a lightscribe compatible drive.

damn, i was really going to make a compulsive acquisition... 80 dollars ....
i dont think i will buy it anymore, i thought it could be recorded on any normal disc...

wow guys, thats really expensive. I guess I'm lucky that way, DVD+R spindles of 30 are $34.20 here .

There are some really cool things one can do with it, hope you have luck finding them for cheaper.

nope, you need special compatible discs with a special lightscribe layer. Lightscribe compatible discs are available as all the popular formats: CD+-R(W), DVD+-R, etc (although I haven't seen lightscribe compatible DVD DL discs though... doesn't mean they don't exist of course).

Lightscribe discs should cost roughly the same. The $80 dollars talked about by Voldemort is for the drive, not for the discs....

eg:
* 50-Pack lightscribe CD-Rs is $62.72 (here) = $1.25 per disc (note: and these are brand CDs; not some cheap white-product thingie)
* Your 30-Pack CD+R is $34.20 = $1.14 per disc

Hardly any difference in price at all... (same goes for the drives). Some shopping around and you'll even find cheaper lightscribe discs and drives than normal ones.

The disks do have a decent outcome, but after a while, the image on top of the disk begins to fade.

There are some lightscribe disks here, there are around 50 to a box.

I'm fairly sure I read somewhere they don't exist yet.
