O.P. Default image editor doesn't change for bmp
Hi,
Since M$ Paint just sucks, I changed the default image editor to PSP.
I did this by changing
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command\(default)
to contain the path to the psp executable, followed by "%1" as shown here.
It works fine for JPG and GIF files (haven't tested others yet), but if I want to edit a BMP file, it still opens in paint
anyone here knows why this happens and how to solve it??
thanks in advance

Right click on a bmp file, go to Properties and change open with... .

O.P. RE: Default image editor doesn't change for bmp
Thanks for your reply, but it's not what I meant.
I want to open all my images with the default Windows viewer, because PSP takes too long to start when I only want to view. This works fine.
In the right-click menu for each image, there is also an "Edit" option. If I click Edit from a JPG or GIF, it starts PSP as it should. However, if I click Edit from a BMP file, it launches M$ Paint, where it should launch PSP.
I hope this makes it clear.

that key did not exist in the first place so I tried creating it. No luck though.
thanks for your reply

If you are using PSP X the go File > Preferences > File Format Associations and click the ones you want to be opened with PSP. I'm quite sure this should do what you want (sorry if I'm wrong). If you aren't using this version I would think that you have to follow something simular anyway.

O.P. RE: Default image editor doesn't change for bmp
I am indeed using PSP X, but the File Format Associations dialog only lets me set PSP as the default app for opening images, not editing them.
Changing the default program for opening is easy, for editing it seems a bit harder to get it right.

RE: Default image editor doesn't change for bmp
in the .BMP key there is a value named "Default", which means it references that under HKCR, so check there. For example, mine Default reads Paint.Picture

O.P. RE: Default image editor doesn't change for bmp
Just to check if it was a setting in the HKCR\.bmp key which caused this, I backed it up and deleted it.
After that, I backed up HKCR\.jpeg too and renamed it to HKCR\.bmp, so that it should handle .bmp files exactly the same way as .jpeg files.
Unfortunately this didn't work either.
My guess is that the M$ Bastards® baked it in the OS somehow...
or are there other places where information like this could be stored?

Have a look at this page. It looks to have exactly what you are after. The steps you want are about 2/3 down the page. (thank god for google )
