I have tried Live Messenger 8 with Plus! Live extension, it seems really rich of features, but I still have one major usability problem with it. The message window is very hard to read, there is no clear distinction (by colors, e.g.) between IN/OUT messages, and there is also no message grouping (ie. when I send 3 messages in a row, they will get only one, single, header).

This is what I am used to from Miranda IM, which allows custom formatting of message window via templates and CSS, messages are grouped together and there is clear visual distinction between IN/OUT messages:

Is it possible to achieve a better message window in Live as well? Current one is not usable at all for me...

You can do that
In the messenger preferences go to the "messages" tab and uncheck the "show contact says: before every message" checkbox.

Aslong as your and the contacts display names arn't to similar it should be fairly easy to tell one from the other, and font also gives a good indicator. However it would be cool to have more control over the formating of messages.

Ok, thanks, that improves it a bit. Still would be nice to have more control over a message window. Or at least some templates like found in Google talk:

You can override contact's fonts with Plus!.
