Whenever I try to open a movie file with Quicktime Pro (latest version) that does not have the ".mov" extension the player will not open it and display the following error message:
"Error -2048: the file is not a movie file"
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Quicktime without success. Any fix? Thanks.

What filetype are you trying to play? QuickTime is very limited to the files that it playsback. It can only really play mpg and mov files, that's about it.

I can play mov files but not mpg files

Use another program then, quicktime is no good as a general purpose media player.
