Im confused, and google searching didnt really help. If your router speed is 54 mbps, what does that mean? because oviously if you do a speed test, you dont get that number. Can someone explain the difference? Thanks. I know its very noobish.

54mbps is the speed of your network card or your network device

So how does that effect anything, if the speed of my connection is not 54 mbps

that means that the top speed your router can handle is 54mbps...
so if you have a 60mbps connection to the internet you waist 6 mbps because of your router...
but normaly you have a (something about) 4-10 mbps internetconnection...
so in that case it doesn't really matter...

If you are on a network, you can transfer files between computers at 54mbps, and connect to the internet at (insert connection speed here)

Ah i see, but anyways, if it only effects that, how come a connection speed increases when using a 54 mbps card than lets say, 11? Even when not on a network? So it does slighlty effect right? What do i do to 
speed up my lets say kbps when downloading a file? (besides getting faster internet services from the companies)

Mbps is MegaBITS not MegaBYTES. (Many people get this confused and think it determines download speeds). Megabit is sending/receiving data, Megabyte is storage.

No. If anything a good 54mbps wireless setup would be more reliable than a shoddy 11mpbs setup, not faster when browsing the internet.

The time you would really see a 54mbps wireless connection shine is when you have 2 computers on a network and you are transferring a large amount of data.

If your not connected to a network, you wont see the numbers 11 or 54, because you wouldn't be using wireless (your connection would be disconnected). I'm not quite sure where that question comes from. (1pc, a wireless router, and an internet connection is still a network, just not really seen as one.)

The point is, your "connection speed" increases because you are connected at a higher speed, however, you are connected to your network, not to the internet. Your internet connection may still be 4mbps or whatever you get from your ISP.

Thanks its a bit cloudy for me still, but you guys definitely  helped clear up the confusion. I guess it explains why my computer crashes when using a 11mbps card.
