No, I'm pretty sure it'd need more than that.  A USB port is radically different from a serial port in what data is sent.

You can buy an Xbox360 pad, they are excellent controllers... though over priced. :(

RE: Serial to USB
To start, a big correction: that isn't a serial connector but a gameport connector, it is quite different than a serial RS232 connector.

Anyways, it all depends...

There are Gameport to USB and vice versa converters. Somem might require additional software, some not. It might work on some joysticks and on some not, it might work on your PC, it might not, it might work with that game, but not with the other... etc...etc...etc...

The only thing you can say with certainty is that Gameport to USB and vice versa converters exist... But you're probably better of buying a joystick with the correct connector in the first place (and it would cost you probably less)

The only thing you can do is try it out (but that would most likely require you to buy some converter plug with the chance it doesn't work with that, so...)

erm.. if this is what you're going todo then no, it will absolutely not work at all. The hardware behind both connectors work in a completely different way and are incompatible without converters of the protocols being used. If you just are going to rewire it to another connector the chances are extremely high you will actually screw up the joystick, the usb port and maybe even your computer because of shortcuts.

That wouldn't help at all:

Serial RS232 9 pin (most common):

Serial RS232 25 pin:

Gameport/Midi 15 pin

£20-25 isn't exactly overpriced for a console pad which works perfectly without any extra software on a PC is it? you just plug in a wired 360 pad and it'll install it for you and it'll work straight away.

Meh, I just think £25 is too much for a controller.  I still bought one though. :P

Oh, and I don't know about you, but I needed to download the software for it for both PCs I've used it on. *-)

If that's an XBox 360 controller, I don't know.

However, in the olden days when USB was just starting to appear, my Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro came with a short cable which converted the gameport to a USB 1.1 connection. No additional software was required, and under XP no software is required at all.

I have a funny feeling that finding one of these adaptors may be quite hard these days... I saw one on Maplin, but it didn't support 8 buttons or force-feedback or anything...
