Hi all,

I looked at the stickies, and I have 1) a fairly fresh Windows XP 2) a bare-bones Live Messenger with no hacks and extensions installed 3) only AVG installed which I have temporarily disabled during install to no effect 4) and I was lazy enough not to demote my normal user so it still indeed has administrator rights.

Problem?  The installer CRASHES.  It doesn’t fail installing, it doesn’t get to even start it.

Need any more info about my computer, do ask.

Well... i think that a fair guess would be that your installer is corrupted , so can you try clearing your cache and downloading Msg Plus! Live again (and installing it of course )?

Downloaded with IE now, from the site, and it crashes just the same.  Previously I had downloaded it with Firefox.

Simtel... Downloads a .zip.exe thingamajig that I would have to run so it downloads the file for me — except it doesn’t quite run either (and I find it ridiculously backwards… tucows do this much cleaner)

Well, I found a 4.01 installer on my computer that used to work and it crashed too

And I downloaded the latest Live from live.com — it's about two megs bigger than the one I downloaded two or so months ago; installed it, result is exactly the same :/ 

Noone else having problems like this?

Try and run the application in Compatibility mode. This should cause some sort of error.

Are you an administrator?

Yes, I'm running as administrator (not THE administrator, but my account is an admin one)

Compatibility mode -- but this is an XP, and the software is pretty much intended for XP as well o_O  In fact, I just tried to run it as Win2000, and it told me that it's meant to be run on XP or newer.

MSXML4 SP2 also didn't help.

My guess is that a software installed on your computer prevents the Plus! setup from running: disable all your antispyware/antiviruses and try again. If the installer crashed, you would get a message about it. If you get nothing, then something else is preventing it to run.

I tried disabling AVG, but it didn't make any difference.  The only other thing I have that tries to protect my computer is Windows Firewall, but I have even chosen to unlock the file and trust it.

The only peculiar things I have on this incarnation of my Windows box that I didn't before is Guild Wars (not usually running when I try to install MPL), and Safari (and as such, the Bonjour services are running all the time) but I have not the slightest idea how these could interfere with a simple installer.

I get the usual "this program has crashed and please send an error report to Microsoft" kind of window.  Maybe I should try to find the drWatson logs for it.
