RE: Which antivirus to get?
NOD32
NOD is much faster than Norton and uses a lot less memory, besides that it is also more accurate in detecting viruses. I used Norton and McAfee in the past, but wouldn't go back to those since i tried NOD32.
Heh... that sounded so much like an advert :/

Clamwin XD
was put impeccably into words at DebianDay for me last Saturday, by Knut Yrvin of Trolltech - adults try something once, fail, and then are like "ffs this doesn't work". Children try, fail, and then try again, and succeed - maybe on the second, or even fifth retry. But the thing is that they keep at it and overcome the problems in the end.

AVG Free is 100% free, and provides great protection. Unlike Norton it will not hog up your system resources .

tons of features including
Registry Change detection
PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) detection
Spyware/Malware/Adware/Tracking Cookie detection
* roflmao456 is using McAfee and is happy with it

RE: Which antivirus to get?
Personally I have used Norton for years and it has found like 1 trojan. I'm finding it not worth the resources (or the money) but I do think that the firewall and intrusion detection are good (I have had a couple of alerts with that), but I could probably just pay for a better firewall program instead. Personally I wouldn't buy it, it is only that my dad buys it and i used a copy of it.
I think that you should be alright if you don't go to overly risky sites and you are careful with opening your emails (Outlook 2007 seems really good with a lot of its protection) and that you use a good spyware cleaner (SpyBot is my personal choice), along with some kind of firewall then I think you should be alright. However, if there are other people that use the computer then it might be wise to use one of the aforementioned anti-virus programs as a safe guard.
Just my 2 cents, do with it as you will.

I recomand Norton but only if you have a copy of 2002 lieing around. 2002 was the last of the "non slugish" versions of Norton. All the new ones are very bad.
Other then that I recomand AVG as linked up top.

Antivirus aren't the best choice if you want REALLY to defend your system... Norton and Panda expecially, they not hog up system resources, like absorbation said. The best free antivirus is AVG Free, I believe it's very good. Also NOD32 is a good antivirus, because it use the euristic method to find viruses.. but now it isn't free...
