I deleted my last thread 'cause I thought I had the problem fixed. Turns out it didn't work, and I can't live on trillian.

Anyway, as it were:
I get an error message when I try to install either WLM 8.0, 8.1 or 8.5 BETA.
When Tried using MSN messenger 7.5, just comes up with "not valid win32" error.
Anyway, what I see:

Any help, I would be greatful of.
Yeah, i'm using Vista Ultimate, no other add-ons for messenger installed.

I was answering before, and you deleted the post... It's possible that depend from settings of old version installed.. can you post the event log please?

Im sure i deleted the programs files folder though, and i've not had two messenger installed simultaneously. (unless i'm mis-understanding)

Now it's giving "C:\Users\Luke\Desktop\install_messenger_nous is not a valid win32 application."

Just in case you still care, I'm not too sure if MSN 7.5 or lower is compatible with Visty here.

The only thing I can think of is that you're got the x64 version of WLM, but it should have "x64" somewhere in the filename, so that rules it out...

I've done some readin around and this seems to be a problem with how the installer was programmed and compiled. It seems it got something todo with manifests, assemblies and other mombo jumbo ...

So it might indicate that the WLM installer was compiled in the wrong way, or that there is even a bug in VC++ or its redistributables.

I would really really really encourage to report this to Microsoft.

Have you tried re-installing Windows, from scratch (= format, not a re-install)? I know this is a severe thing to do, but still...

When you get this error it indicates there is something wrong with the installation of Windows; that is, it is missing some components or there are some screwups in some DLLs or whatever (you didn't messed around too much in Windows didn't you?).

But first, try to install this:

It has been reported that it would solve some cases of that error.
Now, I dunno how good it will work on Vista. Use it at your own risk!

If this was on Windows XP, I would also suggest to first reinstall the Windows Installer 3.0. But since this is Vista, I dunno.

So, to sum up:

1) Out of interest, I would like you to do a global search on your disk for "msvcr80.dll.local". Normally there shouldn't be any file like that. Post back if you did or didn't found it.

2) Also, check in C:\Program Files\Windows Live\installer if there is a file called "Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest" and "msvcr80.dll". Post back if those files are there or not.

3) Now, make sure you remove EVERYTHING related to Messenger:

Follow those instructions VERY carefully and make sure you do not skip anything.

After that install the C++ redist package.

Only then re-download WLM from the official site and try to re-install it.

But above all, report it to Microsoft ASAP!

And even after following all the other steps, It still didn't change anything..

That was going to be my last resort, so haven't done so yet.

Nope, the only thing i've done is the uxtheme.dll patch (which was unsuccessful anyhow)

I'm starting to think this is a problem with windows..
EDIT: going to install XP as a solution (wont be permanent, will go back to vista one time or another)
EDIT: Clean install worked.

3.  On the Disk Cleanup tab, make sure that the following options are selected, and then clear any other options that are selected: • Downloaded program files 

• Temporary Internet files 

• Temporary files 

• Temporary Offline files 

• Offline files 



4.  Click OK, and then click OK again. 



c. Download the latest version of Messenger.



1.  Go to http://get.live.com/messenger/overview 

2.  Click on Get it free or Download Now. 

3.  Click on Save in the file download dialog box and select the folder you wish to save the download package. 



d. Install Messenger:

1.  Right-click Start, and then click Explore. 

2.  Locate the Messenger Setup file that you saved in step 3. 

3.  For a list of setup package names for each operating system, see the following lists:



Set up package for Windows Live Messenger

• Install_Messenger.exe with Widnows Vista, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 



4.  Double-click the Messenger Setup file for your operating system to install Messenger.

I did include it, i dunno why they didn't give a solution for it..

Erm, that is a classic solution for the "invalid 32 bit app" error. And it is very logical they gave that response (which would not have worked for you).

I see no mention of the "app has failed because its side-by-side config is incorrect" error. And that was the most important thing to mention and report!!

And because you had this error the origin of the "invalid 32 bit app" error would most likely be completely different and only secondary as a result of the first error.

I'm sorry to say this, but this is a perfect example of how people do not report errors properly and yet expect MS to respond with a proper working solution....

Moral of the story: you should have reported everything, from the beginning, in detail, especially the "side-by-side" error.
