I would like to sign in, but I don't want to announce that I am online.  Is there a way to do this, sign in but show yourself as offline.  I know that one can immediateley change one's status, but this is not what I mean.  I want to avoid showing any online status (or, possibly, at least "away" or something like that.

Yes, if you're using Windows Live Messenger the sign in screen allows you to set your sign-in status.

There are various other programs (I believe stuffplug-ng is one of them) allow you to do this in previous versions of the MSN client.
