Hi

The reason I use Messenger Plus is that it enables me to rename all the contact information so that I can easily identify people who do not use their name as the display name on the MSN.

Now, I was forced to install Windows Live Messenger and also installed Messenger Plus! Live.  But I don't see where I can use the "rename" feature.

Please let me know how I can use that feature again?

This feature was removed from Plus! Live, because WLM has this feature now (but it isn't as good as Plus!'s version of it from 3.x)

With the new restriction forcing us to update to msn8, do you know if it's possible to ressurect the data from msn7.5's renamed contacts?

The reason is... I'm very much dependent on my Messenger Plus (on 7.5) for renamed contacts and that's what stopped me updating in the first place. I'm willing to tinker and explore if given some guidance.

not that i know of. there were other posts about this topic last week, let me see if i can go find them

Thanks mate. I've tried searching but haven't found anything friutful.

I'd be happy if I could find something which just let me export it as a text file so I could manually re-enter everything in by copying and pasting. Desperate? Yes. But much better than the potential suicide of saying something confidential to the wrong person.

I just realised you posted a link! Thanks so much. I will try it asap- I was too scared to turn my MSN on because of this. Better use this time wisely to copy down my custom names... somehow.

Any tips guys? I'm thinking taking screenshots or something. I'll at least save/export my settings.

After backing up your Plus! / MSN settings you could uninstall MSN 7.5 and download the new MSN Messenger 7.0 build. If i'm not mistaken Plus! 3.63 still works on this 7.0 build and you will be able to use custom Plus! names.

Otherwise you'll need to update to Live Messenger 8.1 which means you'll need Plus! 4.23, but unfortunately Plus! 4.0 and higher does not support custom names anymore. You could use Live Messenger's contact rename feature, but that means you will have to change the names manually and Live Messenger's contact rename feature lacks functionality compared to what Plus! 3.63 did.

Thanks for that. Ok 7.5 works fine with the compatibility mode.

Quick Q though- what's that "7.0 New Build" mean? Is that the same as the old v7 but with security fixes or something?
