Hey all. I have a question regarding appearance. I like to use the 'floating contact/desktop contact' option. But, I was looking at it, and the grey little MSN guy (when the person is offline) to me is too close in color to the white background. I was wondering - remember back in the day when the offline contacts were red? is there a way to do that again? even if just on the desktop contacts?

I think this is something that would require patching of Messenger.  For a feature like this you are better off suggestion it to Rolando, the developer of Mess Patch.  You can suggest it on the forum at http://patch.mess.be/

EDIT:  Sorry, I thought you were talking about the contact list and how it uses the grey messenger buddy.  Please look at NanaFreak's post about the contacts on the desktop

Actually you would just need to replace the images in MsgPlusLiveRes.dll

To do this you can use res hack

The things that you need to replace are:
PNG > IMG_BUDDY-BLOCKED-OFFLINE > 0
PNG > IMG_BUDDY-OFFLINE > 0

Only bad this is that you shouldnt replace things like this (I dunno if patchou would like it or not...) and also you need the 2 images

also: I haven't tested this but it should work is theory

what i was originally hoping to do was find the actual image - use my PSP and "color to target" red, and then plug that image in in place of the grey one.... is that possible/legal?

its very possible... but not legal...

Patchou was referring to the Plus! menu in the contact list and chat window. The images can be changed easily.

See NanaFreak's first post.  You need to use a program like Reshack (just google it and you shall find it).
