O.P. skin the icon in the sys tray
i had a look at the skinnning tutorial on msgstuff and played around with resource hacker but can't find the bit i want to change.
i just want to disguise the msn tray icon to something more inatimate

You're doing the right stuff. You need to make a new icon (remember that it's the 16x16 image that's used in the notification area). Then switch the icon in messenger with your own using Resource Hacker.

Most of the icons are in your msgres.dll file.

And in fact I found them for you, if you are using ResHack... the icons are under:

Icon Group->1
Icon Group->683-691
