...swap out the hard drives?

Will Ubuntu act like Windows if it's plugged into a different mobo?
I'm thinking of trying this:
1) Install Ubuntu on Thinkpad T41(or something) with CD drive
2) Swap the disks
3) Enjoy Gutsy Gibbon on the T20! (T20 has no disc drive so I can't install that way)

Thanks in advance (though I highly doubt it'll work)

If you had read my previous thread, you would have known the T20 doesn't have a CD drive. :P

No, it won't have half the problems Windows does.  Linux installations are easy to move to different hardware.  There could be some things to configure manually (modules loaded, reconfigure X11 for your display), but it could even turn out "plug and play" on mostly similar hardware.

Before you move the drive, set it up to boot to console instead of automatically starting X11 with GUI logon.  After the move, first test X11 out manually (startx) and adjust the configuration as needed.  That is the most likely problem area and you don't want to end up looking at a loop of X11 trying to start and dying, or starting at a resolution your screen can't display.

That said, it also easy to install Linux over the network, from a USB thumb drive, etc. -- if this is all about not having a CD-ROM drive, you might want to look into some of those.

I'm kinda new to Linux, so i haven't got a clue what X11 is, or how to boot from console :P

walkthrough please :(

And as for installing over the network or USB, my network is funny, and i don't know how to use that thing for USB installs. Though i like that method too.

use Wubi =[ then you won't have to worry about switching disks (second partition needed)

It's surprising just how different the Unix-like operating systems can be. I thought I knew the answer, and I was wrong. But, this should be what you're looking for.

was put impeccably into words at DebianDay for me last Saturday, by Knut Yrvin of Trolltech - adults try something once, fail, and then are like "ffs this doesn't work". Children try, fail, and then try again, and succeed - maybe on the second, or even fifth retry. But the thing is that they keep at it and overcome the problems in the end.
