Ive considered suggesting that in the past, didnt they do that with Windows Live Messenger 8, or am i horribly wrong [waits for cookie]...

They've done a similar thing before, and it got cracked right through anyway.
But there were features that were locked still (8.0 Beta 1)

Yeah, it got through by some downgrader that would sign you in using servers of 7.5 or something like that. But they are not doing a new sign-in server like they did with WLM because it was a great change from 7.5 to 8.0 and there isn't much difference as of right now between 8.5 and 9.0, just the features.

Surely a mega company like Microsoft could find some sort of method to block addresses from signing into certain versions.
