The 8600gt wouldn't do much better than the 8500gt. If you have decided you can only afford the 8600gt you may as well get a 7600gt as they are cheaper and perform better. The only bad thing about them is that there is no DX10 support (which doesn't matter seeing as the 8600 can barely play DX10 games).
This is wrong. While the new GT range compares to the old GS range, with the latest nVidia drivers the 8600GT outperforms the 7600GT by a large margin. The 7900GS is still slightly ahead of the 8600GT: You can compare results
