O.P. Is it possible to completely kill the ads?
I want that because they are killing my bandwidth while they are loading :(
This may not be a problem when you use ADSL, but it may be a problem when you are connecting via GPRS.

Any way to completely stop them from loading?

I am thinking about a hosts file but I don't know the addresses... :-/

you can remove the WLM adverts with certain skins

is that what you're after?

IIRC with skins you only hide the ad and not remove it.

Will a patch not do so?
No longer here.

Yep, exactly, skins only hide the adverts, and they don't prevent them from loading.

I believe that a patch will do the same thing, although I haven't tried it...

I recall someone on IRC was once using an anti virus which had blocked all those adverts using the hosts file. In the end, he was unable to login into messenger because of some connection failed error due to it.

I guess you could use wireshark to find the source of all the ad services and then block them with your host file :P Then again, block something incorrectly and bam! fux0redness :P Then again, if you know what you're doing, its pretty easy to undo :P

use Bitlbee (IRC to WLM Gateway)
http://www.bitlbee.org/main.php/news.r.html

or

http://meebo.com

Yes I know you're looking for a way to do it in WLM, oh well :p

# Windows Live Messenger ad servers
127.0.0.1  rad.msn.com
127.0.0.1  global.msads.net
127.0.0.1  rss.video.msn.com
127.0.0.1  ads1.msn.com
127.0.0.1  rad.live.com
127.0.0.1  specials.uk.msn.com

Yes, paste that in your hosts file...apparently :p

or

   1. Click Start button on Windows
   2. Go to Control Panel –> Internet Options
   3. Click on the security tab and click on ’Sites’ under restricted sites.
   4. Add the url “rad.msn.com” and those ads will never be shown again.

Now prove me wrong CookieRevised :p

And by prove me wrong I meant don't prove me wrong.
