O.P. Using WLM without internet explorer
is it possible to use windows live messenger keeping internet explorer to work offline.?

As I understand it, WLM takes its internet connection settings from Internet Explorer so it would not be possible to use it with IE set to "Work Offline"

Out of interest, why do you want IE to be set to "Work Offline" when you will be connected to the internet anyway?

for some reason my computer hangs after about 5 minutes every time i set my internet explorer to work online.

It does require Internet Explorer I'm afraid, as do many other Windows applications.
