I was just wondering if microsoft started to send an update notification to the WLM 8.5 people since WLM 9 is now considered final or is it just the Beta people that are getting the update notification?

Right now it's just the 9.0 beta users who are forced to upgrade to 9.0 final. You can still use 8.5 if you like.
However, Microsoft did say they will be forcing all 8.X users to upgrade in a later stage. I don't know when that later stage will be though, could be anything from a week to almost a year I guess.
Most likely I think it will be in Febuary when the sceduled WLM 9 release was planned maybe they will release an even more refined version for the final planned release
