Try this:
1. Refresh Cache Folder:
A. Exit Messenger, if the Messenger icon appears in the notification area at the far right of the task bar, right-click the Messenger icon in the notification area, and then click Exit.
B. Change the Windows Explorer settings.
1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore to open Windows Explorer.
2. On the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the Advanced settings list, select Show hidden files and folders under Hidden Files and Folders.
5. Clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box.
6. Click OK to close the Folder Options window.
C. Delete the Contacts Cache folders.
i. Click Start, type "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts" then delete all files in the folder
ii. Click Start, type "%USERPROFILE%\Contacts\" then delete all files in the folder
2. Verify and correct the computer's date and time settings.
a. Click Start, type Date and Time in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
b. In the Date and Time Properties dialog box, confirm that the date and time settings are correct. Change them if this is necessary, and then click OK.
3. Clear the Check for server certificate revocation option in Internet Explorer:
a. Start Internet Explorer.
b. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
c. Click the Advanced tab.
d. Under Security, clear the Check for Server certificate revocation (requires restart) check box.
e. Click OK.
f. Exit Internet Explorer
4. Sign in to Windows Live Messenger again.
If issue persists, we need to remove and reinstall your Messenger to ensure that whatever corrupted files on the program will be removed. I will also be providing you the link to download Windows Live Messenger 8.5 (2008) in case you want to use this program.
1. Remove Messenger from the computer.
Note: When you uninstall this program, all Beta programs like Windows Live Mail Beta, Windows Live Photo Gallery Beta will also be removed since these programs are integrated.
A. Uninstall Windows Live Beta or Windows Live Essentials:
1. In the notification area of the taskbar, click the Messenger icon, and then click Exit.
2. On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Under Programs and Features, Click on Windows Live Beta (all programs) then click on Uninstall/Change
Note: If you cannot find Windows Live Beta (all programs) under Programs and Features, please go to Step B.
4. Select Uninstall then click on Continue.
5. Under the selection "You installed these earlier", click on Continue.
B. Uninstall Windows Live Essentials:
1. In the notification area of the taskbar, click the Messenger icon, and then click Exit.
2. On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Under Programs and Features, click on Windows Live Essentials, and then click Uninstall/Change
4. Select Uninstall, click Continue.
5. Under Select the programs you want to uninstall, mark the checkbox on all programs (Messenger, Mail, Photo Gallery, Toolbar, Writer), click Continue.
2. Remove the temporary files and folders from the computer:
a. Click Start , type cleanmgr in the text box, and then press ENTER.
b. In the Disk Cleanup options window, click My Files only.
c. On the Disk Cleanup tab, make sure that only the following options are selected:
. Downloaded Program Files
. Temporary Internet Files
. Temporary files
. Hibernation File Cleaner
. Setup Log Files
. Recycle Bin
. Thumbnails
d. Confirm deletion of the files, and then run the Disk Cleanup utility.
3. Restart the computer.
4. Install Windows Live Messenger
To install Windows Live Messenger 2009:
1. Go to
http://download.live.com
2. Choose your language from the drop down on the right side of the page
3. Click Download
4. Follow the Messenger installation wizard.
To install Windows Live Messenger 2008:
a. Visit the following Web site:
