O.P. RE: no sound when contacts comes online
To check, right click the Speaker icon (Volume Control) in your Notification Area (also known as Tray bar) and select "Open Volume Mixer."
I have this opened all my sounds are active, Skype, speakers, system sounds.
Windows Live Messenger 2011 Options > Alerts,
did you enable the correct alert triggers?
I enabled all the alerts, also the one for when someone comes online.
Windows Live Messenger 2011 Options > Sounds,
have you selected the "Default" sound? Even when "No Sounds" option is turned off, you can still manually disable sounds for certain alerts in that menu as well, you may want to check.
I have set for all options default sound, new person coming on-line, e-mail. chat IM,... all are enabled.
In Messenger Plus! Preferences & Options > Features > Alerts,
You also have the option to trigger a pop-up with (or without) a sound alert. You may want to try and set one there as well, to see if that fixes the problem.
Now this option I don't seem to see under features. I have messenger lock, quick text, quick icons, accept requests, multi accounts, event notifications ( I presume you mean this?) Personalized Status and tabbed chats.
