Chances are high that the version which showed the "upgrade" message was probably an older build (with bugs) of WLM 2009.
If you manually updated like it suggested you should have gotten the newer 2009 version. Aka the "upgrade" message was not to force you to update to 2011 but to update to a newer 2009 build.

thinking I'm on XP"; WLM knows very well if it is running on Windows 7, Vista or XP
