O.P. RE: WMPlus 2 - Windows Media Player plugin
ResHacker is no holy grail, but it can at least provide a preview of the files in there, and also PNG's (which might have also been used, don't think ICOs have been used for the play button for example)... also, I have a legally purchased version of IconWorkshop, which can do a whole lot more than most freeware Icon applications, specifically when dealing with 32-bits icons (not 24-bit as you said, they only contain RGB information, not the alpha channel)...
And I think I know what an ICO consists of, I have written an XP Icon loader by looking at the ICO specs myself because Delphi's TIcon didn't load the 32-bits icons.
As for the System32 icons, I did not notice those before (and haven't looked very far as Fukafly was working on the icons already), so thanks for that. Again however, no single ICO of the play button, and like I said before, those are the only real problem as the rest can be ripped easily. wmploc.dll does have bitmaps containing the buttons, but they're not transparent, so they're of little help... there's simply no other way than manual editing of those buttons...
[Edit]
I see you've updated your post. Anyways, my point still counts: the buttons still can't be ripped without some manual erasing...
