Because I'd probably have to parse [thread=http://...showthread.php?tid=1] and [thread=1] separately, making the code more complex. I'll see about that when I start testing the script though. Why do you want to make more work for yourself deleting most of the URL?
It doesn't matter how cool it looks, because the [thread] and [post] tags will be gone after you submit your post.
