You did consider iAudio's hd player, the M3, right?
It's smaller and lighter than the ipod, cheaper, supports WMA apart from MP3, and the battery lasts
14 hours (not as much as their flash-based players, just because hds need more power, but almost doubles the ipod).
Another model, which I couldn't find in sale online, but should be available soon, gives you up to
35 HOURS of playback.
