you can't send both, the only way your contact can see the txt if they turn off "show custom emoticons in instant messages" but then they don't see the pic

sorry totally miss read your post, you need to tell your contact to enable "show custom emoticons"
tools > options > messages
and tell him/her to tick "show custom emoticons in instant messages"
