yeah... they all work exactly the same. They create a temporarly account and via that account they check if the user is online or not. This was possible because of the bug that MS forgot to fix.
So even if the person had "Tools > Options > Privacy > Only people on my allow list can see my status" checked, the blockcheckers still could find out if the person was online or not. And if he/she was online and you see them as offline, they have blocked you...
But this bug has been fixed, so if you check that option, all blockcheckers become rather useless because there is no way anymore in telling for sure if someone has blocked you...
