Kelowna Gas Station Explosion
Two people were rushed to hospital following a spectacular explosion at a Kelowna gas station Wednesday.
A camper van was being refueled for propane at the Mohawk Gas station on Harvey Ave. near Burtch St. at around 12:30 p.m. when a fire broke out followed by an explosion.
Employee Jeremy Stanbrooks was filling up a car next to the van when the fire started. "My co-worker was filling up the van when he called out fire! I saw the flames and started yelling, everybody leave, everybody leave."
Stanbrooks says he then ran to hit the emergency shut off button and told everybody to get out of the store.
He says that's when an exterior propane tank on the van blew up and he witnessed the owner of the station and another man catch fire. "It blew up just as they were running and their whole backs were on fire."
Fire officials say the owner suffered "moderate burns" while the other man escaped serious injury.
Wow...that's like the most exciting thing that has happened here in a while This palce is prety boring. I'm going to go by there some time and try to get some pic.s of the wreck
