Some dude
here asks the same question. The answer:

half life's story kicked ass, if you paid attention to it, it's about a physics experiment gone awry in a black-book lab, the experiment causes a rift in space and opens a "portal" to a different world, causing for strange and violent creatures to spawn, then it's about your escape from the facility, there's tons of side stories that coincide, like that of security guard barney (blue shift) and another continuation of the half life story that was shipped with counter-strike commercial version when it was very first released (redemption). You are Gordon one of the high energy physicists working on the project when it goes wrong, as you try to escape you realize that the army is trying to eliminate the whole place and all evidence of the occurenece, including the facility and you and other scientists, so while having to avoid the aliens you also have to deal with the special-forces (op-force). And so in the end you escape, close the portal by going to the alien world and this weird government guy takes you away... It's actually a rather intriguing story in comparison to many other games of its time...not the best story ever but a good one...
