The most obvious visual representation of this for me would be to have -

"User X has added User Y to the Conversation" to replace the "User Y has joined the Conversation" or whatever it is at the minute. Which would solve all the problems completely.

He's not saying he want's to know who invited him, he wants to know who invited someone else.
