This would be similar to how the search function works:
You can search on words, and if you do that then "ass" wouldn't be found in "mind the grass." but will be found in "you are an ass.".
If you don't search on words (don't tick the option "Whole word only") then "ass" is found in "mind the grass." aswell as in "you are an ass.".
Word bounderies include spaces (space, tab, newline) and punctuations (.,?!;).
