So far, no plug-in has been made to do this. You will have to rely on programs as the GMail Notifier or POP goes the Gmail. A suggestion has been made before about this, you might be interested in reading plugin idea: Messenger Plus checks gmail. CookieRevised's reply to gmail? also contains a lot of useful information
