I made a long name on msn, and put my self as away and it seems to me that you dont have "Shorten my name when i use a status tag" enabled. if you go to Plus> Preferences> Personalized Status> Configuration(tab)> and its the last check box. Check that, and then you and your contacts can view why you're away
