Asking questions isn't a nuisance, it's a very good way to learn :)

In order to do so you must have MSN Messenger 7. Right-click on a contact's name and go to Messenger Plus! Extras and then choose Rename Contact.

In this window you can press CTRL+K to bring up the colour options, and CTRL+B and CTRL+T and CTRL+U for other formatting controls :)
