I'm not sure whether something liks this has already been discussed, but I noticed that the program 'stuffplugNG 2' includes a 'chat only nickname'.
I haven't tried it, but I assume that it means that you can show a display name on people's contact lists different to the one shown in chat windows.

Well, I think it's a good idea...
