that's not exactly true. That scale measures the energy of the earthquake using logarithms *; that means that the more energy an earthquake has, the higher degrees in that scale, with no limit. However, 9 degrees is quite a lot and it's "nearly impossible" to have an eathquake so big.

* -> ie: each point more in that scale means an earthquake with 10 times more energy.

btw, i've heard on the radio a couple of hours ago that there are already 25000 deaths :-(
