Well everything so far hasn't worked, I ran Spybot, uninstalled Messenger 7.0 from add & remove programs, and then restarted. The icons remain though, as if some kind of permanent bug. Clicking on them takes me no where but a blank screen. Well I hope someone else had the problem that could help. 
if u read the thread u got a link to (
http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=21598 ) then you will see that it clearly says don't try used any other program (eg spybot) to get rid of the sponsor
what u need to do is reinstall messenger plus
with the sponsor !! then goto add/remove program and uninstall plus and select to remove all components. this will then uninstall the sponsor program.
you can then reinstall plus, but make sure u read the install and tick no i don't want to install the sponsor
