Now that may sound stupid, and I'm not quite sure of the physics behind it, but aparently the metal was stressed and tore more easily under the tension.
If the metal hadn't been as tense only two or three of the five compartments would have flooded. Four compartments were the maximum that the ship could hold without sinking.
