Hotmail will not send the whole page that it sends to Internet Explorer, just to get users to switch. They want people to switch to Internet Explorer, but I think that more people just switch away from Hotmail. I am a Gmail user, but the Hotmail restrictions in non-IE browsers didn't exist when I switched, Gmail kicked Hotmail anyway.
ActiveX is a Microsoft-patented technology. That is why it is not in Firefox, Opera, Konquerer etc. Well, Microsoft kind of stole the patent, but that's besides the point ATM.
Windows Update (Microsoft Update)
is ActiveX based, and needs to be, so that it can change your system files. I explained above why ActiveX isn't in Firefox.
