If there's one thing MS are really good at, it's making nice GUIs more a wide audience. So yes, if Microsoft do make competition I think you can expect a really good GUI with very good hardware. Even though MS don't do a lot of hardware work, they do know a lot about hardware. Hopefully a GUI something like PalmOS.
I think if MS did their work right they could do a really good job.

The thing they may mess up is something dumb like making it a player that only does .wma files, and files have to be converted before they can go on the player. However for marketing reasons, I doubt they will do this, but they won't likely want the term "MP3 player" to be used, something like "Portable audio file player"
