Start by unhiding the extension of files, so you can properly see what file is what....
Hiding them is always asking for trouble in one way or the other (I know it's hidden by default, but that default option su**s and should never have been default in Windows)
1) Windows Explorer > Tools > Options > View >
Untick "Hide extension for known file types"
2) After that press on "Apply to all folders"
