Well to make it you'd most likely want to manipulate Gmail's RSS feed which isn't that hard to do

However, my gmail notifier (for firefox) stop working also, an update fixed it so maybe Google have changed how this works in the past few days? I really don't think its worth while creating a whole app to do this when it will be fixed in a few days / already is fixed but you need to download the latest update.
