Yes, it is a uncomfirmed rumour. However, i think it could actually be that soon as not so long ago (can't be bothered to check exactly when) MS did tell us that the Beta was drawing to a close. So it could indeed be true.

Not sure if Microsoft will announce before hand about the official release. With the release of MSN Messenger 7.0 Beta testers were informed just hours before it was made available (If i remember correctly).
