The effect is good. But depends on how you define "good" though....
Some lightscribe drives produce a rather blurry picture. Others are too light (though you could rewrite over it again to make it darker), etc...
Some drives also actually corrupt the data on the disc more than others (so when reading the data on the disc, the drive itself or the software, needs to apply more error correcting than others).
The technology isn't that matured yet and is still in a bit of an "experimental" stage if you will. It isn't yet a standard either, but this can follow in the futur of course (just as there are already plans to make color lightscribing possible => probably means buying a new CD/DVD writer again, so better wait... unless you can spend the money

It also depends on what brand of compatible (thus with that special lightsribe layer) CDs or DVDs discs you use with what brand of lightsribe drive.
Best is to read some test articles about it in the various computer magazines before buying a lightscribe compatible drive.
