thanks for that advice rav0, rebuilding the icon cache worked a treat, i now get IE 7 icons everywhere, including on downloads which makes me very happy (i'm a pedantic person and it just didn't feel right before)

doesn't technically solve the underlying problem, but this way i can live with it, who knows, maybe the full release of IE7 will solve it, or if not i can just install via safe mode again

if anyone can provide further help then that'd be great, but if not then i can live with it like this
