That option reflects what codes are used when you press the shortcuts CTRL+B, CTRL+K, etc...
If you use the formatting panel from the formatting toolbar directly to set colors, BBCodes will always be used. So don't use that formatting panel to set the colors.
To bring up a color dialog when setting colors and which will reflect the color code-choice is to use the shortcut CTRL+R.

There is nothing much to work upon, it functions properly. There are some known limitations (eg: the formatting toolbar color panel will only produce bbcodes), but none of them are of a concearn regarding the OPs question.
