That's in practise. In reality, it's done because 1 byte = 8 bits. Seeing as they both begin with a B it's confusing when they get abbrieviated. I'm sure you're supposed to capitalise one and not the other, but I'm not sure which.
The extra speed "loss" is usually caused by latency (via distance or slow packet-acknowledgement) or just slow servers.
