golden rule: always make a backup first before messing with the registry.
If you want to mess with anything under the
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger key for example, then export that registry key (and thus all its subkeys) to a file. If you then screw up you can always completely remove that key and import that file again.
PS: don't do this with important system keys though... screwing those up might render your OS useless (so you even can't re-import a backup)
