I think what you are after is a feature of Windows Live Messenger 8.0 (the next version up from MSN Messenger), it is called offline messaging. When a contact send a message to you while you are offline then you will get the message/s next time you sign in. Download Windows Live Messenger 8.0 from here

EDIT: Btw, you can get a compatible version of messenger plus! from this link. There are many new features in both products.
